Selling and strangling women

Posted by Achelois on December 12, 2007

It scares me when men who are responsible for the care of womenfolk in their households think that women should be minded constantly more than men because of their ‘awra.’ I have met scores of fathers and brothers who feel that their daughters/sisters need constant monitoring whereas the sons/brothers don’t need that kind of minding.

The result of this kind of obssessive possessiveness is this – a horrendous tale of a father who strangled his daughter who refused to wear a headscarf. (h/p Sf).

Are only women sexual beings? Does sexuality exist only in women? On the other extreme are parents who don’t care at all how many men are knocking up their daughters. We even have parents who sell their daughters for some ‘extra cash.’

An equally appalling story is that of a mother from Philippines who has “been detained by police for forcing her 12-year-old daughter into prostitution since the age of nine.”

Let my prayer be heard, Lord. Keep women safe – all women - of all ages, colour, shape, and sizes, ameen. Eve has bled enough.

Its tied into women upholding the family’s “reputation” and “honour”

Its usually also why some women are circumcised - God forbid she should feel any pleasure from sex; the world would turn upside down! It;d encourage “promiscious behaviour”.

As if its as simple as a+b=c.

And that mom who force her daughter to work as a prostitute “slave”, how stone hearted she can be..

This reminds me of a similar post I have brewing. You always do that to me Suroor, bring out my thoughtful side on the struggles of women….

I dont know if the reasons are relevant when a parent allows her daughter to be raped… or a man kills his daughter for not wearing hijab.. I dont know if it has anything to do with anything about islam or sexuality, or any of that… I think its just evil, and evil is as evil does… and though the justifications may be islam or this or that… it really is at the end of the day just an excuse and really not the true reason…. do you see what I’m saying? I dont know…

And speaking of such posts brewing, this is one from sometime ago, maybe you might find it interesting: http://aishaiqbal.blogspot.com/2006/01/when-you-were-born-i-prayed-you-would.html

My mom attended the high school that the girl who was strangled went to. It’s so incredibly scary to hear this thappening so close to home. I guess you can never escape these things happening.. there’s just some horribly sick and twisted parents out there. To bring a child into the world and then kill it.. despicable .. and most furthest I thnk you are from God at that point.

You know suroor, I am still following the story, the police have yet to say what was the real reason behind all this. It’s the girl’s friends who are saying that she wanted to *fit in* and to be *normal*. I have no idea what they mean by being *normal*. I am a mother of 2 young girls and I find this very distressing. Everyone is *running* away with the story that they are muslims and its a muslim thing. I had a woman during one of our women’s group ask me what I will do if she was my daughter. I told her, I would do what any mother would do. Religion shouldn’t make us stand out like that. I simply told her, I have expectations for my kids like she has for her own. Any parent wants their kids to be good law abiding citizens, to do well in life, to come home at respectable times, to follow their religion,to hang out with good friends. I think that Aqsa had a wrong group of friends, but I could be wrong. A young girl full of dreams and life just destroyed like that. Wearing a hijab(or not) should not be a struggle that would lead to death, it is our deeds that make us who we are.

It is quite possible, sf, that the girl retaliated in a wrong manner or actually committed a sin. Nevertheless, I would just second that “it is our deeds that make us who we are.”

  11. AnonyMouse Says:

I wrote a post on MuslimMatters about it… also, it’s been pointed out several times that Aqsa (the girl) was possibly suffering domestic abuse at home, and that it never really was about hijaab in the first place.

It really has nothing to do with Islam… I think it’s about parent/ kid conflict, about the dad not controlling his anger and his actions, and bad choices all around :(
